In a perfect world, I would have an hour to devote to reading storybooks with my children every night. Unfortunately, with both my husband and I being full-time working parents, week nights in my house are often hectic and rushed, and as a result, sharing a quiet moment to focus on story time becomes challenging. So how can we ensure that we are being proper models for reading enjoyment? Right before sitting down to begin a book with my children, I channel my inner cheerleader and proceed with the following 3 mantras top-of-mind:
- Consistency: Be as consistent as possible. This means read with your children at the same time of day, every day (My husband and I prefer bedtime — it’s the perfect way to wind down, bond with your child and have their full attention)
- Enthusiasm: Be enthusiastic: We are all tired, all the time! But yawning and speed reading through a book sends the wrong message to your child. Reading should be fun and interesting, and your level of enthusiasm will reflect that.
- Patience: Be patient. I can’t tell you how many times I have read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Good Night Moon, but my children request these books (and others) frequently. I want them to feel comfortable participating, and when they smile and chime-in with every reading, that’s my reward; that’s what keeps me going.
I know it can be tough to rally the energy at the end of the day to make it a successful storytime. Yet, as busy but well-meaning parents, we have to push ourselves just a little more each night to become role-models for how enriching and enjoyable reading can be. When you have the urge to skip story time, I hope these words of encouragement will help keep you going…
